*ADHD medication is only prescribed when clinically appropriate.
ADHD medications fall into two main categories: stimulants and non-stimulants. Both types help manage symptoms, but their effectiveness and side effects may vary.
Stimulants and non-stimulants are the two primary types of ADHD medications, each with distinct mechanisms and benefits.
Stimulants are the most commonly prescribed and work by increasing levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to improved focus and reduced hyperactivity. They are known for their quick effectiveness but may have side effects like insomnia and increased heart rate. Adhdadvisor.org can currently only offer stimulant medication in select states.
Non-stimulants offer an alternative for those who do not respond well to stimulants or prefer a different approach. They work by supporting focus and emotional regulation through different brain pathways and generally have a milder side effect profile. Non-stimulants may take longer to show benefits but provide a viable option for sustained symptom management without the potential stimulant-related side effects.
Note: Always consult with a healthcare provider to determine the best medication for your needs and to understand potential side effects.
